Are you thinking about raising chickens or ducks in your backyard? We’ll give you the nitty gritty details – on what you’ll need to consider and prepare for raising poultry in your back yard. Learn what you need to know to make an informed decision about having companion flocks and how to care for them. This class provides an accessible introduction for anyone who’s interested in providing holistic care for poultry. We will cover all of the basics of caring for baby chicks and adult chickens in an urban or suburban setting. Class includes instructional handouts, resource list, and hands on-learning with handling and examining chickens. The topics covered include: Brief history, chicken and duck facts Legal aspects of chicken keeping - what you need to know Pros and Cons of raising a flock Hatching eggs/ chicks/ point of lay/ ex-laying hens - considerations for each Understanding animal welfare Overview of breeds, choosing the right breeds for your back yard be it breeds for pets, strong egg producers, meat producers, or dual purpose. Cleaning routines to make light work Biosecurity (including guidance on protecting your birds from Avian Influenza) Different feed types and what to feed Egg handling, store bought vs. pasture raised. Collection and proper storage of eggs. The importance of clean water in maintaining health The coop, the outdoor run and environmental enrichment. Building and or purchasing a predator proof coop with a chickens well being and optimal comfort in mind. Equipment for feeding and watering your chickens. First aid / natural and holistic solutions.
